It seems like just about every day of the year is a national food holiday. However, some make more sense than others. For example, National Enchilada Day is May 5th. That’s perfect because it coincides with a popular Mexican-American celebration – Cinco de Mayo.
While many Americans mistakenly think that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico’s equivalent of Independence Day in the US, it does commemorate a particular victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. The fact is that Mexico had already been independent for about 50 years when this battle took place. However, the occasion is celebrated in Mexico as a minor holiday (federal buildings stay open) and is mostly an important regional holiday in the state of Puebla.
In the US, though, Cinco de Mayo has become a day to celebrate Mexican culture. Since enchiladas originated in Mexico, it is a fitting day for the food’s national holiday. So how do you plan to celebrate this year?
