Meeting the Common Dietary Restriction Needs of Wedding Guests

Wedding guests are there to enjoy your special day, but it can put a damper on things if someone gets sick at the reception due to a food sensitivity. What are the major food allergies and sensitivities to watch out for? Here are some of the most common foods being avoided according to a survey from The Harris Poll.

  • Peanuts – This is usually the most serious of the allergens. While only 5% of people are staying away from peanuts, you can’t even have peanuts in the room if you have a guest with an allergy. The menu has to be planned accordingly to ensure there is no cross-contamination, and an announcement should be made to guests to be certain that no one brings in a food item with a peanut ingredient.
  • Shellfish – A shellfish allergy is another one that can be deadly. So while many of the 7% of people avoiding shellfish don’t have a serious reaction, you need to be sure to ask.
  • Gluten – 10% of people are off gluten, a protein contained in wheat, barley, rye, and several other grains. You may not think it’s that serious since only about 1% of people actually have celiac disease. However, for many others, there are still severe and lasting reactions due to a sensitivity.
