Pretzels are a tasty treat with a rich history that goes back hundreds of years. From pretzel sticks and twists to stuffed pretzels, people are always searching for inventive ways to eat this delicious, salty snack. If you love pretzels as much as we do, then you may be planning to celebrate National Pretzel Day on April 26, 2018. Whether you are going to celebrate with an Instagram post of a pretzel you purchased or by baking up some pretzels of your own, we wanted to share what we’ve found while researching the history of this amazing snack.
A Brief History of the Pretzel
While many of the tales told about the pretzel are legend rather than facts with real historical backing, many of the traditions are actually connected with the church. For example, one tale states that pretzels were first developed by a 7th-century monk who wanted to make a treat for kids who properly learned to recite their prayers. Other legends connect the pretzel to a French monastery. Some even say the shape of pretzel twists is supposed to indicate the trinity.
Of course, the more well-known and historically supported history of the pretzel goes back to 12th century Germany. Today they are frequently paired with beer and are a staple at Oktoberfest and other German celebrations.
